Supernatural's Sam and Dean are at a standstill with their Mark of Cain research, so the brothers are preparing to take on a few monster of the week cases instead.

Dean (Jensen Ackles) is carefully toeing the line between human and psycho killer, but the elder hunter will choose to spend his time saving people instead of stewing in the bunker.

"You'll start seeing that in the next few episodes," Ackles explained at Creation Entertainment's Salute to Supernatural in Houston. "Sam and Dean get back to what they're really good at and that's kind of the monster of the week kind of thing. So we start finding cases and, I think, what they're writing for Dean is...he's pushing to go down that road so he doesn't have to think about the Mark of Cain."

Sam (Jared Padalecki), however, is more concerned with trying to cure his brother. Just as Dean was hell bent on restoring Sam's soul back in season six, Sam will be even more concerned than Dean when it comes to removing the demon tramp stamp.

"Of course Sam is having a difficult time allowing [them to take on new cases] because he's really focused on wanting to fix his brother," Ackles continued. "So you will start seeing Dean start to drag Sam along going, 'Come on, come on, this is what we've got to do. There's nothing we can do about the Mark right now so lets go and at least do something and help people somewhere.'"

Viewers can tuck into two new monster-of-the-week cases before Cain's return in episode 14. Tuesday's "About a Boy" will introduce Hansel of Hansel and Gretel fame, and Feb. 10's "Halt & Catch Fire" will see the boys fight a good old fashion ghost.
