Dorian Gray experienced rejection for the first time of Showtime's Penny Dreadful last season, and it's uncertain whether or not he will recover from it.

'Penny Dreadful' Star Talks 'Various States Of Undress'

Previews for the show's second season show Dorian (Reeve Carney) pining after Vanessa Ives (Eva Green), who broke off their relationship after their intimacy resulted in a frightening encounter with demonic possession. Fearful of what he might unleash in her, Vanessa saw it best to distance herself for Dorian despite her own feelings for him.

Dorian is set to get a new love interest for the program's second installment, but will it really be love? Or will he use this person as a distraction? Dorian was genuinely interested in Vanessa, and as a man with all the time in the world he might just try to fight for her. After all, Dorian isn't accustomed to failure.

Caliban Finds An Unlikely Ally On 'Penny Dreadful'

With such a pursuit, however, would come the question of Dorian's past. Fans of the classic Oscar Wilde novel, The Picture of Dorian Gray, know that the character's eternal youth is the result of a portrait which ages for him. While the series has shown glimpses of Dorian staring at his own painting, creator John Logan has yet to reveal the picture.

Furthermore, it is uncertain whether Logan will stick to the source material or branch out in crafting a complicated history for one of literature's most seductive characters.

Penny Dreadful will return on Showtime for a second season in 2015.
