Bruce Jenner has been making headlines as of late because he is under speculation for wanting to undergo a sex change operation, which a doctor thinks could actually kill the star.

On Tuesday, InTouch reported that a doctor said an operation like this could kill the reality TV star because of how old he is.

The 65-year-old former Olympian may not have time on his side when it comes to wanting to fulfill his wish of becoming a woman.

Dr. Harold Reed, who has never treated Jenner but who specializes in sex changes, gave some insight on this kind of surgery.

"Someone's age is a huge determinant as to whether they should be taking hormones or not," said Reed.

The fact that Jenner is well in to his 60s could work against him when he attempts to make the transition.

"We used to prescribe hormones for all transsexual and transgender people, regardless of their age," said Reed. "But about two years ago the National Health Bureau concluded that people who are on estrogen that are over the age of 55 have a much higher incidence of heart disease, heart attacks and coagulopathy. Coagulopathy is a condition in which a person forms blood clots more easily than other individuals and it can also lead to strokes, heart attacks and other serious health problems."

Apparently these high risks come with guidelines for treating older patients for sex changes.

"There is an advisory out for doctors in our profession that if you are treating a transsexual or transgender patient over the age of 55, you should not prescribe estrogen," Reed said.
