Consider it handled. Scandal actress Kerry Washington is being honored by GLAAD for her work in encouraging equality around the world.

On Tuesday, Variety reported that the actress would be presented with the Vanguard award at the 26th Annual GLAAD Media Awards at the Beverly Hilton on March 21.

The organization noted that Washington has become the first African American woman to star in a lead role in a drama series since 1974.

GLAAD is recognizing Washington for 'tirelessly' speaking out in support of equality for the LGBT community and for participating in Spirit Day, the anti-bullying campaign.

Sarah Kate Ellis, the GLAAD President and CEO, has nothing but praise for Washington and her efforts to restore unity within society.

"Throughout her illustrious career, Kerry Washington has consistently brought life to characters that encourage acceptance of LGBT people," Ellis said. "Her outspoken support for equality, both here at home and abroad, has sent messages of hope and empowerment to fans all over the world, fostering dialogue that builds understanding and helps move hearts and minds."

The actress took to Twitter to show gratitude for being this year's award recipient by saying, "Truly honored."

Previous Vanguard Award recipients include Elizabeth Taylor, Jennifer Lopez, Janet Jackson, Charlize Theron, Drew Barrymore and others.
