Ian Somerhalder Discusses His Directorial Debut On 'The Vampire Diaries'

The video is below and in it Somerhalder gets insanely passionate in answering three fan questions.

The first question came from Chloe Leighton and she asked the actor about his drive for helping the environment and neglected animals.

Who Is Nina Dobrev's Favorite 'TVD' Costar?

"What drives your passion for helping the environment and neglected animals?" Somerhalder read aloud.

"The animals we share our lives with greatly impact our lives and without them our lives would be awful," Somerhalder remarked.

"A planet full of humans and only humans, not a place I want to be," he dished, adding, "These animals drive our passions and they lend so much to our lives and they have just as much as a right to be happy and safe as we do."

Up next, Somerhalder answered a question from Brittany Stehberger, who asked about one of the most memorable things a fan has ever said to him.

The 36-year-old discussed a fan that was very sick, but fought her way through her sickness because of him.

"She said, 'Literally for the last four years of my life I've had this disease that was killing me every day. You got me through it,'" he shared.

Somerhalder revealed how gratifying it was to play a part in her life continuing.

The actor answered one other question from a fan named Alexis Marie. She asked him about how TVD has impacted his life.

"It's impacted my life in the most powerful, positive way," he disclosed.

He went on to thank the fans for allowing his life to be the way it is.

The Vampire Diaries returns Thursday with a new episode on The CW at 8 p.m. ET.
