Athlete Caroline Wozniacki has opened up on the pain and struggle she went through after her engagement with golfer Rory McIlroy suddenly came to an end.

'Sports Illustrated' Swimsuit Celebration Chatter

On Tuesday, The Independent posted an interview with Wozniacki who mentioned what it was like when McIlroy apparently called off their relationship just days after wedding invitations were sent out.

"It feels like someone close to you has died," the tennis player said.

Things seemed to be going so splendidly for the former couple until it just crumbled unexpectedly.

"In my head I had everything until that moment," Wozniacki shared. "I had a great career, I was getting married, I have a perfect family. Everything was great. There was really nothing going against me. I was happy, very happy."

"Then all of a sudden something happens that you don't expect," she continued. "You just see your world turned around, literally from one second to the next. I think I didn't know how strong I was until that happened. And I didn't know how much you can actually take. It really feels like someone close to you has died."

Despite her struggles and suffering, the tennis star now has a better idea on who she is today with wisdom that she's come to terms with.

"You just learn about life. You have to enjoy it while it's there," she said. "You have to enjoy all the great moments. I think now when I look back I wouldn't have been without it. Because now I really know that I'm strong, I know what I want, I know what I can accept, what I need, what I don't need."
