The kiss came as a shock, but Carter insists there were no ill intentions behind it.

"I feel like they have a history, and they've just been through a traumatic incident. He almost lost his informant," Carter explained.

"That's his job and I believe that Raylan still cares for Ava, so he's also slightly concerned about what might be going on with her, and if she's going to survive this or not. He's constantly telling her it's going to be okay, so it's in his hands whether that actually comes true," she added.

Carter also shared that her character is "beyond exhausted, and she's been through the whole ordeal of the hunt and her potential demise."

Ava just wants to believe in what Raylan is telling her. She can and will get out of this situation and have a better life moving forward.

Boyd ties into this since despite all of his ups and downs with Ava, he is hurt by the fact that something might be going on between her and Raylan.

"It's all so powerfully romantic and heartbreaking," Carter said of the situation.

Justified is airing now on FX at 10 p.m. ET on Tuesdays.
