Actress Rita Wilson revealed that she was recently diagnosed with breast cancer.

Chatter On Tom Hanks & Rita Wilson's Million Dollar Mansion

On Tuesday, People shared an interview with the actress and wife of Tom Hanks as she explained her personal situation involving a double mastectomy and reconstructive surgery. She mentioned that she has taken a break from her latest show and is recovering smoothly since the operation.

"I have taken a leave from the play Fish in the Dark to deal with a personal health issue," Wilson said. "Last week, with my husband by my side, and with the love and support of family and friends, I underwent a bilateral mastectomy and reconstruction for breast cancer after a diagnosis of invasive lobular carcinoma. I am recovering and most importantly, expected to make a full recovery."

The actress mentioned that she made a wise decision to get a second opinion after PLCIS (pleomorphic carcinoma in situ) was discovered after she had two surgical breast biopsies. The pathology had shown no sign of cancer, but she decided to get a second thought on this after a friend, who also had breast cancer, suggested it.

"A different pathologist found invasive lobular carcinoma," Wilson said. "His diagnosis of cancer was confirmed by, yet, another pathologist. I share this to educate others that a second opinion is crucial to your health. You have nothing to lose if both opinions match up for the good, and everything to gain if something that was missed is found, which does happen. Early diagnosis is key."

The actress then pointed out that she is doing much better and feels "blessed" to be surrounded by her husband, family, friends and doctors.

"I am getting better every day and look forward to renewed health," she said.
