Tom Cruise could be leaving Scientology, according to new reports coming out from various media outlets this week. It has been reported that the actor is reconsidering his involvement with the controversial cult following his recent divorce from Katie Holmes.

The actor was reportedly stunned when Holmes, filed for divorce on June 28, and it has been reported that this has made him seriously re-evaluate his values and beliefs. Now in a bid to potentially win her back, he is now said to be contemplating cutting ties with the controversial religion altogether.

"Now he's lost the most precious thing in his life, he sees that his Scientology beliefs may not have hurt his box office but have ended not one but two marriages," a source close to Cruise reportedly told The People.

"It was a terrifying and rude awakening for Tom when Katie served him with divorce papers. He's used to feeling undefeatable and untouchable. When he lost Katie he felt a failure," the source added.

Cruise first joined Scientology in 1990 through his first wife, Mimi Rogers, and has become the most prominent figure of the church in recent years.

However, his involvement has been controversial and some reports have suggested his involvement with Scientology has been a major factor in his divorces with Holmes, as well as second wife Nicole Kidman.

Holmes, who was brought up as a Catholic, was alleged to have been worried about Suri’s life if put in the center of the cult. It had been reported that their 6-year-old daughter could be sent to a radical Scientology group known as the Sea Organization in the future.

The People source has said, "He has lost Nicole and now his wife and daughter. He has always used the Scientology techniques but he has now realized they don't work in marriage. If Tom truly leaves [Scientology], Katie would reconsider. She was in love with Tom, he was her childhood crush, it took a lot of strength to break free. But now she has peace of mind but no love."

"Tom hasn't admitted that he's definitely leaving Scientology for good but he's distanced himself from those in the church and has been hanging out with good friends who aren't part of the religion," a source also reportedly told Star Magazine recently.

The insider said, "Tom's been leaning on friends who have different perspectives, getting advice on moving on from Katie as well as on everything he's been going through with Scientology. He's finally seeing that being such an advocate for Scientology hasn't served him as well as he'd hoped- he's gone through three divorces, and his public perception has sunk to an all-time low."
