"He was a sweetheart," Garlington told People on Tuesday. "I adored him."

The Pillow Talk star's lover mentioned that he wanted to keep an eye on Hudson when rumors splurged that he was gay.

"I stood outside his cottage on Universal lot, pretending to read 'Variety,' which was probably upside down at the time," Garlington admitted. "He walked out and down the street. He looked back one. That was it."

The man eventually received a call from Hudson's friend who offered him the chance to meet the actor. The two then started hanging out, which eventually led to a secret romance. But there was a close call when a female fan broke into Hudson's house when he and Garlington were on a road trip.

"In a drawer on a side table were pictures of me with no shirt on," the actor's man said. "She didn't find them, but it shook him up. He realized he was vulnerable. He put gates on the house after that."

The two seemed to have beautiful memories together, including Hudson showing Garlington how to shave, but the two went their separate ways after three years.

"I wanted a father figure and he was not strong enough," Garlington said. "Rock wasn't a real strong personality. He was a gentle giant."

After Hudson died from AIDS-related causes in 1985, Garlington read his biography; as it turns out, the actor said that Garlington was his "true love."

"I broke down and cried," Garlington said after reading this. "I just lost it. He said his mother and I were the only people he ever loved. I had no idea I meant that much to him."
