Each contestant selected one song as a Mother's Day dedication while the coaches made the picks for the other song each of their remaining contestants sang.

Pharrell Williams' artist Sawyer Fredericks did the rare thing of performing a song by an independent artist who happens to be "a dear family friend" of his competitor Joshua Davis from Adam Levine's team.

Fredericks performed his Mother's Day dedication song "Shine On" by Michigan singer and songwriter May Erlewine, which can be seen below.

"What an honor to hear you sing my song," Erlewine tweeted to Fredericks, adding, "it was just beautiful!"

Davis even commended the teen for his rendition of his friend's song. He thanked Fredericks for singing it and therefore giving Erlewine a broader appeal.

"I know this is a competition and all, but damn, it was good to hear," he gushed over Fredericks singing "Shine On" on national TV.

Fredericks "was super happy to play it" since he loves the song.

On Instagram, the teen contestant thanked viewers of The Voice for getting his version of Erlewine's song to no. 8 on iTunes. He also urged them to "listen to May's original [version]" since it "has another powerful verse." He also noted she is one of his "favorite singers."
