The critics were backing the Amy Schumer and Judd Apatow powerhouse Trainwreck from the start but its box office success is unprecedented.

Trainwreck is standing right behind Ant-Man and Minions in the weekend closing July 19. The movie has rung up $30.1 million over its first weekend, Deadline reports.

The movie, which is a Judd Apatow-styled rom-com, or the Amy Schumer brand of feminist truth speak, whichever way you look at it, is one of the most talked about films this season. Schumer -- who has already become the cynosure for the media with her stand-up and Comedy Central series Inside Amy Schumer -- is now being considered a comic force reckonable with heavyweights like Tina Fey and Amy Poehler now.

Schumer's success comes with its share of controversy. The comedian recently came under attack for racist undertones in her humor but she had her defense in place.

"I will joke about things you like and I will joke about things you aren't comfortable with. And that's ok," she wrote. "Stick with me and trust I am joking. I go in and out of playing an irreverent idiot. That includes making dumb jokes involving race. I enjoy playing the girl who time to time says the dumbest thing possible and playing with race is a thing we are not supposed to do, which is what makes it so fun for comics. You can call it a 'blind spot for racism' or 'lazy' but you are wrong," she went on. "It is a joke and it is funny. I know that because people laugh at it. Even if you personally did not. I am not going to start joking about safe material."

Schumer also graces the cover of GQ's comedy issue in a Star Wars-themed shoot, which has raised some eyebrows over at Disney.

The official Twitter account for Star Wars pretty clearly expressed the studio's disapproval: "Lucasfilm & Disney didn't approve, participate in or condone the inappropriate use of our characters in this manner."
