The Vampire Diaries ended its sixth season with the departure of Nina Dobrev, the portrayer of Elena Gilbert and her many doppelgangers, leaving many to ponder how the seventh season would manage without her.

Stefan & Damon Are 'Hosting Thanksgiving' On 'The Vampire Diaries'

Well, Season 7 has been airing now since early October and it has managed just fine with the addition of Lily's (Annie Wersching) heretic family and the intriguing time jumps between the past, present and future.

One cast member recently admitted concern about how the loss of Dobrev would impact the show. Any guesses to which actor said it? Well, it was Ian Somerhalder, who plays mostly sarcastic Damon Salvatore.

Is There Enough 'Common Ground' Presently For 'The Vampire Diaries' & 'The Originals' To Have Crossovers?

In a recent interview with Variety, Somerhalder dished, "I personally think everyone thought it was going to be a huge departure after Elena was gone. And I was one of those people."

"I thought it was going to be a huge departure for the typical formula of our show. By virtue of the fact that it wasn't a huge leap for mankind, as far as changing it up, there were some differences that sort of mixed up the formula," he explained.

He did reveal what the cast is presently shooting for a future episode is quite different though.

"What we've just started shooting is such a departure (from what is expected of the show)," he shared, explaining, "I just started shooting episode 10, which is a concept episode. The episode was really about Damon, but that's not why I think it was the best at all. The way the story was put together ... every artisan from set to producers to wardrobe to everyone was just so on-point."

It's a Civil War episode, which the swoon-worthy actor described as "so well-executed." Even with the departure of Dobrev, the show - from the writers to the cast and everyone in between - still has that spark that makes it so great.

The Vampire Diaries airs on Thursdays at 8 p.m. ET on The CW.
