The American Idol finalist Crystal Bowersox has been confirmed to star as the late country singer Patsy Cline on Broadway.

On March 26, producers of the musical, Always...Patsy Cline confirmed the 25-year-old singer will play the lead role for the summer production, which will be directed by John Rando, according to People Magazine. This year marks the 50th anniversary of Cline's death.

The musical will feature 27 Cline songs including Your Cheating Heart, Crazy, I Fall to Pieces and Walkin' After Midnight.

The musical was written by Ted Swindley in 1988 and is based on a true story involving Cline and her friendship with a fan from Houston. The singer and her fan continued to be in touch from the time they met in 1961 at honkey-tonk in Texas until the time Cline died in 1963 from a plane crash when she was 30.

Bowersox, who has long blonde dreds, was on the ninth season of American Idol in 2010. She is promoting her latest album All That For This and has performed on Jay Leno's Late Night Show.

She has acted in ABC's Burden of Proof in 2011. Always...Patsy Cline will open in August, but the theater and the dates are not yet available.
