Fans clapped back when Madonna was signed as the sole performer for the Prince tribute at the Billboard Music Awards that aired Sunday night.

And they still weren't too pleased when she rocked the stage at the actual event, despite Stevie Wonder showing up as well.

Madonna kicked off the performance as she sat on a velvety purple chair to honor the Purple Reign singer just a little more than a month after his passing.

She donned a purple and glittery outfit as she kicked off the tribute and belted out his up-beat and high energy tunes like Let’s Go Crazy and his ballads like Nothing Compares To U. Interestingly enough, despite reports, Madonna was not the only artist to take the stage and honor Prince. None other than Stevie Wonder came to help her out as the two sang a duet version of his hit song Purple Reign.

Celebrities and musical recording artists also held up a purple light in the audience; allowing everyone to get involved with the tribute.

Questlove also took part and introduced the performance with a touching speech. “On April 21st, we lost Prince,” Questlove began. “I say ‘we,’ because it affects us all, and no matter what kind of music we make, no matter how long we have made it, no matter our race, our color, our creed, our sexual orientation – all of us live in the land of music. And his departure from it was an earthquake. But his departure leaves behind so much work still to do.” Questlove continued and urged viewers and the audience to “follow the trails [Prince] blazed” and “be fierce, uncompromising, experimental and generous.”

The Weeknd also dedicated one of his awards to the late singer.
