It has been three years since Injustice: Gods Among Us graced our consoles and mobile devices. Since then, the dark, intense and engaging fighting game has practically become a classic. Now, Warner Bros. Interactive and DC Entertainment have confirmed that the sequel to the critically-acclaimed title, dubbed Injustice 2, will be released next year.

Injustice 2 is set to continue the dark narrative of Gods Among Us, as Batman and other DC superheroes attempt to restore order in a world where a group of people is attempting to restore the defunct, authoritarian government established by Superman. The first Injustice game surprised DC fans worldwide by introducing a very dark story featuring Superman running amok after accidentally killing his loved ones due to a ploy by the Joker.

Bloody, grim and definitely brutal in its one-on-one battles and its storytelling, Injustice: Gods Among Us immediately garnered success due to its mature plot and its engaging gameplay.

From what could be seen in the Injustice 2 trailer, however, it seems like the upcoming game would introduce a number of interesting new features for each of the characters. For one, the upcoming game would give players an almost RPG-esque experience by customizing their heroes and their abilities. By playing the game, players would be able to garner equipment for their characters, which could then be used as power-ups during battles.

David Haddad, President, Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment, teased how NetherRealm Studios, the developer of the game, is integrating the customization feature in the upcoming title.

"Expanding the DC Universe in games continues to be one of our top priorities, and Injustice 2 showcases amazing gameplay and an original story to bring the characters to life for players. NetherRealm Studios is offering fans an experience of customizing and battling with DC's iconic characters in an entirely new way," he said.

Ed Boon, Creative Director of NetherRealm Studios, is confident that Injustice 2 would introduce several new innovations that would be groundbreaking in the fighting game genre.

"In Injustice 2, we are introducing new features that will change the way fans play fighting games. We're always interested in pushing the genre forward and allowing players to customize and level up their favorite DC Super Heroes and Super-Villains is a significant leap," he said.

The official release date for Injustice 2 has not been revealed as of writing, though the game is expected to arrive sometime in 2017.
