Dzhokhar Tsarnaev Condition: Boston Bombing Suspect Awake with Throat Injury & Answers Question on Paper [VIDEO/PHOTOS]
After suffering serious injuries, Boston bombing suspect Dzhokhar Tsarnarv woke up on Sunday and is responding to inquiries from authorities about the marathon bombing that took place on April 15.
The 19-year-old faces a gunshot wound to his throat and is unable to talk but is answering questions by writing down his responses, authorities said. He was shot through his mouth and throat, according to CBS' 60 Minutes, and police are not sure if the gun shot was self-inflicted or from a round fired by an officer.
He is responding to questions about the possibility of additional unexploded bombs and about other terrorist cell members, according to ABC News. He may not be able to talk but officials said he has begun writing down some answers to the questions asked. He is listed in serious but stable condition as of Sunday.
Tsarnarv and his brother, Tamerlan, are suspected of being responsible for the terrorist bombing that took place at the Boston Marathon, which killed three and injured more than 140. Tamerlan was killed on April 18 following a shootout the brothers were involved in with police. Dzhokhar fled the scene but was captured on April 19. He was immediately taken to Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center to be treated, the same hospital where his brother was pronounced dead.
"He had lost a lot of blood," police spokesperson David Procopio said to the Boston Herald. "He was so weak that we were able to just go in and scoop him up."
Dzhokhar could face charges at state and federal levels but Massachusetts has no dealth penalty. The brothers' mother, Zubeidat Tsarnaev, revealed that American authorities have been keeping tabs on Tamerlan for a while.
"You know the FBI followed him for several years," she said,"and when he got back from Dagestan last year they called him and asked him what was the purpose of his visit to his homeland."
