UFO sightings have recently been on the rise, with the several new footages of alleged Unidentified Flying Objects being reported and uploaded on an almost daily basis. As much as most of them could easily be hoaxes, however, there are some incidents that simply are just a bit too bizarre to disregard.

A recent sighting in South Africa has captured the attention of UFO enthusiasts the world over, with reports of a mysterious green beam of light falling from the sky in the city of Johannesburg. What was particularly interesting about the alleged UFO footage was the claim that the spacecraft seemed to have been shot down by an African fighter jet.

As much as the video seemed to show compelling proof that UFOs really do exist, the possibility that most of them were hoaxes is also very real. Back in December alone, a "crash site" was erected in Sandton as a part of a big marketing campaign. While the set pieces of the "crash" were quite obviously fake, the incident nonetheless sparked a renewed interest in Unidentified Flying Objects in the area.

Africa has actually been the site for a number of prominent UFO sightings in the past, with some incidents even alleging that actual extraterrestrials landed in East Rand. During that particular event, two police officers confirmed the sighting, and several residents also reported seeing white and red lights.

This is not all, however, as Africa is also home to several accounts of UFO abduction. Throughout the past century or so, several abduction claims have been reported in the region. Just like the sightings, there are some accounts that could easily be ignored as a hoax, but there are also those which are just a bit too genuine to ignore.

The rise in UFO sightings has not been confined to Africa, either. Just recently, NASA came under fire from UFO enthusiasts after the ISS' feed was unceremoniously cut after a piece of alleged "space debris" suddenly stopped midway through re-entry.
