Microsoft recently slashed the price of the Surface Book. Could this mean that the Microsoft Surface Book 2 release date is just around the corner?

Apple has just had its time in the limelight, with the successful release of the iPhone 7, iPhone 7 Plus and the Apple Watch Series 2. Now, it seems like Microsoft is gearing up for its own product launch, and if rumors prove accurate, a new Surface Book might very well make a debut very soon.

Discounts Heralding the Coming of New Surface Device?

Apart from the leaked image in Microsoft's headquarters that seemed to suggest a 2016 Surface device, the tech giant has also applied significant discounts to its two most powerful homegrown machines, the Surface Pro 4 and the Surface Book. In the past, these promotions usually run prior to the release of a new device.

This is because before a new product gets released, firms such as Microsoft usually take it upon themselves to clear out their stocks as much as possible. This was done by the tech giant in the weeks leading up to the release of the Xbox One S when it massively slashed the price of the original Xbox One.

Refurbished Surface Pro 4, Surface Book Discounts

Though the devices which are part of Microsoft's promotion are tagged as refurbished, the tech giant has assured the buying public that the devices are good as new. Microsoft further stated that each Surface Pro 4 and Surface Book being sold at a discount has passed rigorous cosmetic and hardware quality inspections.

The discounts are significant, with the price of the top-of-the-line Surface Book, which equipped with 512GB of storage, a Core i7 chip, and 16GB of RAM, taking massive $405 price cut.

The entry-level devices are getting notable discounts too, with the base-model Surface Pro 4 being priced at $764 instead of $899 and the base-model Surface Book being priced at $1,274 instead of $1,499.

Surface Book 2 to be Unveiled Soon?

With Microsoft seemingly attempting to clear its warehouses of Surface Books and Surface Pro 4 devices, many are speculating that the tech giant is gearing up for the release of a new Surface device, which would be unveiled later this year. As to what device that would be, numerous speculations point to the possibility of the Surface Book 2 being the machine that would be unveiled soon.

This is because rumors are high that the Surface Book 2 would not really feature much design changes from the first-generation Surface Book. Just like Apple's ubiquitous MacBook Pros, the Surface Book 2 would allegedly feature hardware tweaks that will all happen under the hood. Thus, it would be far easier for Microsoft to release the Surface Book 2 this year, instead of the Surface Pro 5, which would most likely require a complete redesign.
