A mother changed her child's diaper openly on a table at a Starbucks in Denver and an employee called police, as reported by NBS's News 9.

Ruth Burgos went on a coffee run on Friday night and took her one-year-old son Thiago to the restroom.

There was no changing table at the Denver Starbucks on the 7900 block of East 49th Avenue so Burgos changed her son's diaper in the seating area.

"As a mother, you have to do what you have to do. Wherever you have to do it," Burgos said.

"I just kind of wiped him off, cleaned him off as quickly as I could," Burgos said.

A Starbucks employee noticed what Burgos was doing and tossed her a rag.

Alex Burgos, who was present, said the employee then spoke to his wife in a condescending tone and started joking with other employees about it.

He said he responded with pouring a venti coffee on the floor. He also exchanged strong words and hand gestures with the employee.

A store employee called Denver police to report a "disturbance" and an officer responded around 10 p.m. There were no arrests.

Jamie Riley, spokesperson for Starbucks, said the company is "apologized to the Burgos family," was "concerned" and wanted all customers treated with "dignity and respect."

Jamie Dennis, president of Glendale-based ABC Nannies, said many family friendly businesses do not offer changing tables. He also said that doing a diaper change out in the open should only be done as a parent's last resort to avoid making onlookers uncomfortable.

Burgos says this never would have happened if Starbucks would've had a changing table in the restroom.
