Star Trek Into Darkness has come under fire after one of the scenes in the sci-fi movie features Dr. Carol Marcus played by Alice Eve, dressed in a skimpy lingerie set.

After one film critic slammed the film for the misgynostic scene, Star Trek screenwriter Damon Lindelof took full responsibility for the semi-nude scene and said that the scene was unnecessary.

"I copped to the fact that we should have done a better job of not being gratuitous in our representation of a barely clothed actress," Lindelof tweeted. "What I'm saying is I hear you, I take full responsibility, and will be more mindful in the future.

Lindelof also mentioned that there was a scene in the movie written for Khan , played by Benedict Cumberbatch to remove his shirt, but he never got the shot to do so. "You know why? Because getting actors to take their clothes off is DEMEANING AND HORRIBLE AND..." he said.

After seeing the movie, online reviewer Jill Pantozzi wrote: "Suffice to say, her purpose in the film was minimal and they made her stand around in underwear for absolutely no reason. We didn't even see an actual display of the intelligence she was touted to have."

Meanwhile, the J.J. Abrams-directed sequel came at the top of the box office with $84.1 million in North America after a four-day debut, Enstars reported.

Over the weekend, the film brought in $40 million from overseas for a global total of $164.6 million. Box office observers predicted that Into Darkness had high chance of bringing in $100 million in North America.

The movie details the adventure of how the Enterprise crew discovers an unstoppable force of terror from within their own organization. Captain Kirk played by Chris Pine leads his team to a manhunt to a war-zone world to capture a one man weapon of mass destruction. Other cast members include Zoe Saldana, Anton Yelchin, Simon Pegg, John Cho and Karl Urban.
