Early projections for the weekend box office suggest that Will Smith's new blockbuster After Earth is set to bomb.

After Earth brought in between $9 and $11 million on Friday, meaning that they're looking at a mid-$20 million opening for the weekend, according to sources at Deadline. This would be considered a disappointment, especially since Smith has been seen as such a bankable movie star.

Smith co-stars with his son Jaden in the M. Night Shyamalan-directed sci-fi thriller. The production company for After Earth, Sony Pictures, was projecting that it would make $30-40 million.

Rival studios said that the film is "2.5 times worse than Jaden Smith's Karate Kid reboot and half of Oblivion's opening."

Now You See Me is looking to get similar numbers, with early projections in the low $20 million range. The magic-themed caper made between $8 and $9 million on Friday.

The film sports an all-star cast of Jesse Eisenberg, Isla Fisher, Morgan Freeman, Michael Caine, Woody Harrelson and Mark Ruffalo.

Fast & Furious 6 is projected to be the No. 1 film again at the box office this weekend, however, with projections in the $35-40 million range. The action film made between $10 and $12 million on Friday.

"If Fast & Furious 6 does hold onto the checkered flag two weeks in a row, it will have accomplished something no other film in the franchise has been able to pull off," said box office analyst Jeff Bock.

The Hangover Part III disappointed in its opening last weekend ($41 million) and is expected to rake in a mere $15 million this weekend. The comedy sequel made $5 million on Friday. The film has made $69 million in its first seven days, which is meager compared to The Hangover Part II's $148 million made in 2011 in the same timeframe.
