This Is The End opened to $7.8 million on its opening day Wednesday, setting itself up for a $30 million weekend based on estimates.

The R-rated comedy - starring Seth Rogen, James Franco, Jonah Hill and Danny McBride - premiered on Wednesday to great success. It is expected to rake in over $30 million through the weekend, despite competing with Superman blockbuster Man of Steel.

The comedy, which has such star cameos as Rihanna, Jason Segel, Paul Rudd, Mindy Kaling and Kevin Hart is currently showing in over 2,900 theaters across the U.S. It was co-directed and written by Rogen and Evan Goldberg. The film has scored 82 percent positive reviews on critic review aggregate Rotten Tomatoes at time of publication.

Man of Steel is opening Thursday night in limited engagements before opening nationwide Friday. The blockbuster is expected to gross between $85-100 million over the weekend, predicted to win the No. 1 spot at the box office. The film already premiered worldwide in several locations. In the Philippines, the film grossed $1.7 million on Wednesday, becoming the biggest opening of all time for the country.

Popular movie ticket website Fandango revealed last week that Man of Steel was their biggest ticket seller of the week, despite not even coming out yet.

"The signs are that the [Superman] franchise is back," box office analyst Jeff Bock said on Wednesday, "Of course, with comic-book heroes, you need more than big box office. You have to connect with fanboys. We thought the franchise was back a few years ago."

This Is The End and Man of Steel will have to compete against last weekend's No. 1 film The Purge, which grossed $34 million. Fast & Furious 6 is still in contention, grossing close to $20 million in its third weekend.

Sofia Coppola's teenage heist film The Bling Ring starring Emma Watson is opening in limited engagements on Friday.
