Fans of Oscar and Grammy-winning performer, Sir Elton John, are in mourning following an official statement on social media regarding his mother's death.

The piano rock pioneer announced at 2:23 a.m. on Dec. 4 that his 92-year-old mother, Sheila Farebrother, passed away.

So sad to say that my mother passed away this morning. I only saw her last Monday and I am in shock. Travel safe Mum. Thank you for everything. I will miss you so much.

The "Your Song" singer and The Lion King composer's tweet was liked nearly 10,000 times and he received thousands of comments of sympathy from celebrities and fans.

"So sorry for your loss, Elton," wrote actress and singer Betty Buckley. "My deepest condolences."

"I am so sorry for your loss. May she rest in peace," a fan wrote. "I wish you and your loved ones a lot of strength in this tough time. My deepest condolences. I will light you a candle tonight. Stay strong!"

"Love and prayers are aloft," wrote Heart's Nancy Wilson.

Milestone Mourning Anniversaries

In addition to his mother's passing, the "Saturday's Night Alright for Fighting" performer spent 2017 honoring close and personal friends.

John participated in the ITV documentary, Diana, Our Mother: Her Life and Legacy. The film talked to the singer along with Diana's sons, Princes William and Harry, along with the late Princess' friends and family members. He also posted a photo of him and Princess Diana with the caption, "20 years ago today, the world lost an angel. RIP."

His mother's death is also a few weeks away from the first anniversary of George Michael's death.

"I am in deep shock," the singer tweeted on December 26, 2016. "I have lost a beloved friend-the kindest, most generous soul and a brilliant artist."

Turbulent Mother-Son Relationship

The piano man's relationship with his mother has been well reported by mass media over the decades. The "Crocodile Rock" singer disowned his mother in 2008 after he instructed Farebrother to cut off all contact with his former friends who served as business partners.

However, in February this year, John announced that he rekindled his relationship with his mother.

"Dear Mum, Happy Mother's Day!" John wrote on Instagram. "So happy we are back in touch. Love, Elton xo"
