From light sabers to combative apes, 2017 had movies that rocked our emotions, made our hearts break, and had us on the edge of our seats. As the year comes to close, let's look back at some of the best films that came out this year.

Here are our top seven favorite flicks of 2017:

Star Wars: The Last Jedi

The most anticipated film of the year, was Star Wars: The Last Jedi. The film picked up where The Force Awakens left off, with Rey (Daisy Ridley) finding Jedi Master Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill) and convincing him to help save the galaxy. The film offered gut-wrenching moments, action packed scenes, and a touching tribute to the beloved Carrie Fisher, who died last year after completing her scenes.

Wonder Woman

Gal Gadot is probably one of 2017's female breakout stars! The Fast and Furious actress shone as the titular character, Diana Prince a.k.a. Wonder Woman. The action-packed film that is based of the DC Comics also starred Chris Pine, Robin Wright, Connie Nielsen, and David Thewlis. Wonder Woman follows the origins of Prince and how she came to our world. The storyline was beautifully written and set the tone well for the next DC film, Justice League.

Logan

Emotionally riveting and fiercely acted, Logan was the finale chapter in the Wolverine trilogy and it closed the story well. Set in a desolate future where mutants are once again fighting to exist, Logan proves why Wolverine is and always will be everyone's favorite X-Men.

War For The Planet of The Apes

The finale chapter in the Planet of the Apes trilogy was a touching film with tragic scenes that moved audiences' to tears. The apes fight for survival and their leader, Caesar, who tried his best to keep the peace between humans and apes, is forced to turn against everything he believes in when his family is taken from him.

It (2017)

The 2017 version of Stephen King's It was met with skepticism and criticism at first. The movie had a lot of expectation to live up to as its predecessor, the 1990 television movie, set the bar pretty high. However, this film stands in a league of its own and was one the scariest films made this year. The cast, though they were young, gave their A-game and Skarsgard's Pennywise will forever haunt us in our nightmares.

Girls Trip

After the success of Bridesmaids, there weren't many all-female movies that could hold its own and also be as raunchy and funny. Girls Trip was that and more! The all-female movie that took place during the Essence Music Festival, made audiences laugh until it hurt and also gave us a new star to look out for: Tiffany Haddish.

Thor: Ragnarok

This year was a year of endings for a lot of trilogies. Thor: Ragarok was one of them. The film was a different tone for the Thor films, as it showed a more rugged side of our beloved superhero and Avenger. Thor also had a few comedic moments, thanks to Mark Ruffalo who portrays The Hulk. The film ended where Avengers: Infinity Wars will most likely pick up and also sets a darker future for the upcoming Marvel films.
