Ruffalo's character, Adam, is five years sober but still struggling from sex addiction when he meets and falls in love with Phoebe, played by Paltrow.

Pink appears in the movie, marking the performer's feature film debut. She used her birth name, Alecia Moore, in the credits. The film also features Tim Robbins (Mystic River), Josh Gad (Book of Mormon), Patrick Fugit (Almost Famous), Carol Kane (Annie Hall) and Joely Richardson (The Patriot) who stars as Ruffalo's fellow sex addict he meets in a sex addiction therapy group.

Director Stuart Blumberg reunites with Ruffalo on the project. The two worked together when Ruffalo starred in The Kids Are All Right, which Blumberg co-wrote. Thanks for Sharing is Blumberg's directorial debut and he also co-wrote the screenplay with Matt Winston.

The film was featured at the Toronto Film Festival in 2012 where it received mostly positive reviews.

Paltrow, 40, explained in an interview with The Globe and Mail the reason she agreed to work on the project.

"There's a line in the movie where somebody says something like, 'Isn't sex addiction just an excuse men use when they get caught cheating?' But actually, it is a real pathology," said Paltrow.

"It was interesting to learn about it, see what the behavior is and what causes it, and how people are sober. It was very interesting. I learned a lot," she added.
