Man of Steel continues to make strides in the box office.

With sales from the weekend, the Superman film recently surpassed the $500 million mark in worldwide ticket sales, The Hollywood Reporter noted Sunday. The Zack Snyder-directed film is now in its third weekend in theaters. In the U.S. alone it has earned $248.7 million, while internationally it has grossed $271.7 million so far.

In its opening weekend, Man of Steel brought in approximately $113 million in domestic sales. At the same time it made $71.6 million internationally. The superhero flick has become the biggest opening for any movie released in the month of June, as reported by BoxOfficeMojo.com. However, it has not beaten Iron Man 3 and taken the lead at the biggest movie debut of the year.

Man of Steel stars Henry Cavill as the lead role and Amy Adams as Lois Lane. Cavill plays Kal-El, who is also known as Clark Kent, and the movie transitions between his life as a grown-up and his childhood. The film explains how he was sent to Earth from the planet Kypton and eventually was forced to deal with his secret background.

Cavill has spoken candidly about the pressure he faced to play the character.

"It's important to do the role justice," he told Cineplex Magazine in a September 2012 interview. "There are a lot of people relying on me to do this well. I gladly accept that responsibility, and it's a great one to have because it's a wonderful opportunity."

Despite his fears, the actor was praised by the film's screenwriter David S. Goyer.

"He feels real. He doesn't feel like this ethereal angel," Goyer told The Los Angeles Times in a June interview. "Somehow he found a way to embody Superman but not get lost in Superman."

Regardless of the impressive ticket sales, the movie had opened to mixed reviews from critics. Some made the comparison to say Man of Steel, which premiered in theaters on June 14, does not stand a chance next to the Dark Knight trilogy.
