Dear Evan Hansen has set its Broadway closing date.

Dear Evan Hansen opened at the Music Box Theatre back in 2017. It told the story of high schooler Evan Hansen, played by Ben Platt, who moves through high school awkward, lonely, and eager for friends. Through a string of miscommunications, a boy that has always found himself in the background finds himself in the center screen of his school, and the world.

This musical, which touched the hearts of many and won the Tony Award for Best Musical alongside six other awards, has officially announced that it will be closing its doors on September 18th.

The announcement comes as a surprise to many in light of the unquestionable popularity of the show. By its closing date, Dear Evan Hansen will have broken the top 50 longest running shows in Broadway history. It will have run for 1,678 regular performances and 21 preview performances.

The show made history - beautifully commenting on the impact of social media of the modern day, without taking its finger off of the pulse of what modern theatricality should be.

While the closing date has been set, these final days of the show still have a great deal of excitement in store. Stranger Things star Gaten Matarazzo will join the cast on July 19th in the role of Jared. It is believed that he will finish out the role when the show closes its doors.

Sam Primack will be the final Evan Hansen to perform the role on the Brodway stage, starting his performances on September 6th.

We are sad to see Dear Evan Hansen closing, but we are excited to see what the future of the show holds - we're sure there are hundreds of high school students eagerly hoping it'll be available for schools next year.
