HBO Max Renews Critical Darling Rom-Com 'Starstruck' Starring Rose Matafeo for Season Three
Earlier today, it was announced that HBO Max will be renewing the critically-acclaimed British romantic comedy series Starstruck for its third season. Written by and starring comedian Rose Matafeo, the show is a co-production with BBC Three - its first season was BBC Three's most successful new comedy, after achieving over three million requests on the BBC iPlayer.
"Jessie [is] an aimless millennial New Zealander living in East London who has a chance encounter with Tom Kapoor (Nikesh Patel), an A-list actor, on New Year's Eve. The show follows them as they navigate their attraction to each other, which is complicated by Tom's career, Jessie's quirky group of friends and their mutual inability to communicate properly.
"Season 2 of the show ended with the two temporarily breaking up, but after her friends help her realize her tendency to run from relationships when they get serious, Jessie apologizes to Tom and the two reunite."
In a statement released to the media, Matafeo addressed the good news with her characteristic humor, saying:
"A third? Sure. Fine. I'm truly thrilled to bring this incredibly talented cast back for a third installment, and equally excited to clamber into the director's seat alongside my nice friend Alice Snedden who I cannot seem to get rid of."
HBO Max also seems equally thrilled to continue Starstruck, with a statement from their Head of Original Content, Sarah Aubrey:
"Rose has created a show that strikes just the right balance of heart and humor. Starstruck is exactly the kind of rom-com that we love at HBO Max, and we are so happy to see Jessie and Tom's story continue."
Gregor Sharp of BBC Comedy Commissioning also remarked:
"Starstruck is a blast of fresh comedy air, perfectly capturing the emotional mayhem of a new relationship with sharp wit, dry humor and a truthful eye - we can't wait to see what Rose and the team have in store for Jessie and Tom in the new series."
