Author Neil Gaiman took to Twitter to reveal the fate of the second season of Netflix's "The Sandman", and fans wish this were just a nightmare.

"The Sandman" has been the talk of the town since its release on August 5, scoring the first-place position on the Netflix Top 10 charts during its first week.

Many fans praise Netflix for capturing the essence of Neil Gaiman's stories, and the author himself is actively responding to tweets about the series. In a tweet where he urged fans to keep promoting the dark fantasy series, he had solemnly revealed, "If we get a second season".

Fans expressed their shock that a sequel was not already guaranteed, despite the show's success. Gaiman warns fans on Twitter that a second season may not be likely due to the show being too expensive to produce.

Other novels by Neil Gaiman that developed into a series adaptation include "American Gods" and "Good Omens", while his books "Coraline" and "Stardust" were developed into films.

'The Sandman' Bonus Episode?

While "The Sandman" was expected to release only 10 episodes, fans are delighted as Netflix added a surprise episode that features two stories titled "A Dream of a Thousand Cats" and "Calliope".

In a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, Gaiman discussed how the bonus episode was set into motion from the beginning of production.

"It was David Goyer's suggestion, but we immediately embraced it." Gaiman explained. "We would do 10 episodes and then there would be an 11th, a special that no one would know about. That's what everyone knew they were buying. It also meant we could begin the process for those stories very, very early on."

With the surprise that Netflix had in store for viewers, fans are hoping that perhaps "The Sandman" will stretch to a sequel, or at least they can dream for one.

"The Sandman" star-studded cast feature Tom Sturridge as Dream, Jenna Coleman as Johanna Constantine, Boyd Holbrook as The Corinthian, Vivienne Acheampong as Lucienne, and more. The dark fantasy series is available to stream on Netflix.
