King Frederik X and Queen Mary sealed their new reign with a kiss.

On Sunday, Queen Margrethe of Denmark signed a declaration of her abdication, making her eldest son, King Frederik, 55, the new monarch. The country's prime minister proclaimed Her Majesty's son as the new King on the balcony of Christiansborg Castle.

After the proclamation and a short speech, Queen Mary, 51, joined her husband on the balcony, along with their four children. They waved to the crowd, and, at one point, the King kissed his wife, prompting the crowd to cheer on them, People reported.

The new King was reportedly emotional while on the balcony. He was seen wiping his tears away. Queen Mary held his hands tightly when she stood beside him.

King Frederik was plagued with infidelity rumors weeks before he was proclaimed the new monarch of Denmark. Some experts even claimed Queen Margrethe decided to abdicate to save his marriage.

Royal biographer Phil Dampier, former royal correspondent for The Sun and author of "Royally Suited: Harry and Meghan in Their Own Words," weighed in on Queen Margrethe's decision to abdicate. The expert on European monarchies told MailOnline that the rumors that the former heir cheated on his wife were probably among the reasons his mother abdicated the throne.

"I think Margrethe may have worried that their marriage was in trouble, and therefore she had to act," Dampier said.

"The Queen always thought Mary was a fantastic asset to the royal family, and if she thought she might leave, it would have been a disaster. She will now hope that Frederik and Mary patch up any differences and work together as the new King and Queen."

Dampier doubled down on his take on the matter in an interview with The Telegraph. According to him, Queen Margrethe might have made the decision because she was terrified that King Frederik's marriage was breaking up and the royal family would lose then-Princess Mary.

"It just seems an extraordinary coincidence that she should make this unexpected announcement just a couple of months after stories emerged of the Crown Prince supposedly having an affair," Dampier said.

"In two weeks' time, the Prince and Princess will be pitched together as King and Queen, and they will have to get on with it. The Queen may be thinking that they will patch up their differences, and it will save their marriage."

King Frederik sparked a rumored affair with Mexican-born socialite Genoveva Casanova after they were photographed together during his private trip to Madrid. Queen Mary was spotted in tears and shared cryptic posts about loneliness weeks after the sighting, per MailOnline. Casanova denied any romantic relationship with the Danish royal.
