Shane Gillis has fired back at Chelsea Handler after she called out his jokes during the recent Netflix roast of Kevin Hart, turning their comedy clash into one of the most talked-about moments from the event.

The exchange took place during "The Roast of Kevin Hart," part of Netflix Is a Joke Fest, which streamed on May 10. The live event was packed with big-name comedians and celebrities, but it was the tension between Gillis and Handler that kept drawing attention after the show ended.

Gillis, who hosted the roast, had already stirred controversy during his set. He made remarks aimed at Handler about her past public appearances and political views, along with references tied to past reporting about her attending a dinner at Jeffrey Epstein's home, Complex reported.

The comments immediately set a tense tone between the two comedians on stage. Handler later responded at the podium, pushing back against Gillis and other comedians' material. She criticized jokes she saw as offensive, especially those she believed crossed serious lines involving race and violence.

Chelsea Handler Says Kevin Hart Roast Went Too Far

One of Gillis' jokes referenced Kevin Hart's height in a way Handler said went too far. She said she did not find the humor acceptable and questioned the tone of the roast. After the event, Gillis responded through a statement shared by his representative.

"This is a big moment for Chelsea. I am glad she's capitalizing. Good for her. We're all rooting for her," he said, adding a sarcastic tone while also promoting an upcoming show in Philadelphia scheduled for July 17.

Handler had appeared on "Deon Cole's Funny Knowing You" podcast, where she doubled down on her criticism of the roast.

According to PageSix, she described parts of it as "racist" and "sexist," and said some jokes went too far for a comedy stage. She also expressed disappointment with the overall tone, saying the night felt "gross" to her.

One of the most controversial jokes she pointed to involved Gillis referencing a historical act of racial violence while joking about Hart. She said such material should never be treated as entertainment and emphasized that certain topics should not be turned into punchlines.
