2013 was a highly successful year at the box office for blockbuster movies, including the latest installments of some of the biggest franchises in the world.

Iron Man 3 was the most successful film of the year in the U.S., totaling over $400 million at the box office. The film also made over $1 billion worldwide.

Despicable Me 2 was by far the most successful animated film of the year, grossing $366 million domestically. This put it an no. 2 overall. The Hunger Games: Catching Fire is catching up, though, with at least $300 million and counting. The Jennifer Lawrence-starring film is at no. 3 overall as of early December.

Man of Steel came in at no. 4 at the box office, grossing just shy of $300 million in the U.S. Monsters University rounded out the top five with a gross of $268 million. 

Gravity is the only original film to place within the top 10, coming in at no. 6 with $250 million. Films seven through 10 all grossed within $200-250 million, with Fast & Furious 6 at no. 7, Oz: The Great and Powerful at no. 8, Star Trek Into Darkness at no. 9 and World War Z at no. 10.

As for the 11-15 ranking films, there was an eclectic mix of different types of movies. Thor: The Dark World came in at no. 11, The Croods at no. 12, The Heat at no. 13, We're the Millers at no. 14 and The Great Gatsby at no. 15.
