12 Years a Slave has officially landed the award for Best Motion Picture Drama at the Golden Globes, as it beat out other widely received flicks Gravity, Captain Phillips, Philomena, and Rush.

Interestingly enough, when the awards show first began, there was just one category for Best Picture. However, at the 9th Golden Globe Awards, the Acting and Best Picture prizes were split up into Drama and Musical/Comedy categories.

The very first Golden Globe Awards ceremony took place in January 1944 in Los Angeles at the 20th-Century Fox studios. However, since 1961, the highly anticipated festivities have been held at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Calif., which is where it has stayed ever since.

Interestingly enough, the NBC network had the exclusive rights to broadcast the respective festivities, eventually the announcement was made that there wouldn't be any limitations imposed on other media outlets covering the press conference, announcing those projects and actors who were winners.

In last year's contest for the respective category, it was Argo that nabbed the respective award. The action-packed film starred Ben Affleck and the CIA going undercover with a camera crew in order to rescue six Americans during the Iranian hostage crisis.
