Ahead of the highly-anticipated series finale episode, CBS has released an official preview clip for the final hour of How I Met Your Mother.

Mother's Death Theory Resurfaces

The clip details an extensive flashback sequence that showed Barney finally getting the woman he desired after nine years of chasing after her (and subsequently sleeping with most of the female population of New York City along the way).

The first clip features a flashback to season 1, when Robin first moved to New York and complained about her job at Metro News One and lack of friends. After she got up from the table, Lily, Marshall, Ted and Barney discussed letting her into their group for the first time.

Fun Guest Star Appearing In Final Episode?

As Barney and Ted began their long battle to see who could get Robin, Lily used her voice of reason to tell them the only way it was possible.

"I really want this girl to stay a part of our lives, so the only way you're allowed to hook up with her, is if you marry her," she said in the clip.

Barney, who was always up for a challenge, replied, "Too rich for my blood," and walked away.

The clip then fast-forwards to Barney and Robin as they dance on their wedding day, while Ted, Marshall and Lily look on.

"That son of a b--h did it," Ted says.

"He really did," Lily replies.

While it isn't much of a look at the episode, the clip still gives fans a small taste of how the show plans to say its goodbyes.

The How I Met Your Mother series finale airs Monday, March 31 at 8 p.m. on CBS.
