One Direction singer Liam Payne may be a single man again. The 20-year-old and his girlfriend Sophia Smith have reportedly called it quits.

"He's devastated that it's over but it was for the best," a source told Us Weekly. "They were spending too much time apart and it's only going to get worse this year -- the band going on a super long tour, her getting busier with university."

The couple first met at St. Peter's Collegiate School in Wolverhampton, England and dated for about eight months. It seems their time apart may be the cause of their split as Payne is on the "Where We Are" tour with the rest of the One Direction heartthrobs.

"Too much long distance," the source added. "It was draining for the both of them and led to a lot of arguments. Liam was the one who chose to end it."

"There was no way to maintain the relationship," another source said. "He had to do it as they would never see each other and he didn't think it was fair to her."

Payne may not be taking the break up well judging by his recent tweets. "Can't be without you," he wrote on Friday, followed by, "Worse thing I ever did was let you go." "No all I got left is the thought of you," he also wrote. "When a rich hitter want you."

Payne previously dated model and dancer Danielle Peazer for three years before splitting in May 2013.
