Eva Mendes' mysterious absence from the Cannes Film Festival has set off a series of rumors that she and Ryan Gosling have broken up once again, though the actress may have boycotted due to a reported rivalry with Zero Dark Thirty actress Jessica Chastain, who was present at the event.

Ryan Gosling Heads To Cannes WITHOUT Eva Mendes?

According to a May 23 report on Design & Trend, Mendes has been forcing her agent (who represents both actresses) to get her auditions for each and every role Chastain has gone out for, after becoming miffed that Chastain won the role of Maya in the Oscar-nominated film Zero Dark Thirty over her.

"Eva has informed her that any role Jessica goes up for, she wants to audition for as well," an insider said about the actress, who is considered a different type from the Oscar nominee.

The obsession has reportedly made life a living hell for the agent, who is "caught in the middle and is trying hard to keep them apart and on different career tracks, but Eva's declaration that she wants to audition for the same roles has made things all the more complicated."

The problem for Mendes is that she is reportedly often considered by producers and casting agents as "sexy material," not as an Oscar-winning actress, a stereotype she has been desperate to break away from.

"Eva desperately wanted to be considered for the part as she's tired of being typecast as a love interest and wants to be a leading lady," the source said of the actress losing the Zero Dark Thirty role to Chastain.

Chastain was nominated for an Oscar for her role in the film, and won a Golden Globe for the role as well.

Mendes' absence from the Film Festival initially caused reports that she and Gosling, who have been dating for three years, were splitting up. The couple has not been photographed together since November 2013.
