Whitney Houston's "Sparkle": Family Disputes Red Carpet Premiere Date
"Sparkle," the last movie that the late singer Whitney Houston's starred in before her death, is set to open August 17.
The film's red carpet premiere is tentatively scheduled a day before the movie hits theaters nationwide, instead of Monday which is common in Hollywood, due to Houston's family's demands in Los Angeles.
According to Showbiz 411, two sources told the website that Houston's family has made the scheduling of the premiere very difficult for the film's producers. The Houstons' have been objecting to having any family members attend the premiere near August 9th, which is Whitney's 49th birthday.
Questions have also been raised as to who's coming from Houston's family to represent her. Her daughter Bobbi Kristina, her brother Michael, who recently sang a tribute to Whitney at the 2012 BET Awards, sister-in-law Donna and her mother Cissy Houston have been discussed as options.
"I'm surprised they're having it in Los Angeles, where Whitney died," said one source. "They should be having it in New York."
"Sparkle" is a remake of the 1976 film of the same name, which centered on three singing teenage sisters from Harlem who form a girl group in the late 1950s inspired by The Supremes singing group. The remake takes place in Detroit, Michigan in the 1960s during the Motown era. The film stars Jordin Sparks, Derek Luke, Whitney Houston, Mike Epps, Cee Lo Green, Carmen Ejogo, Tika Sumpter, Tamela Mann and Omari Hardwick.
Houston was found dead at the Beverly Hilton Hotel submerged in a bathtub in February the night before the Grammys.
The Los Angeles County coroner's office concluded that the singer died from several factors including accidental drowning and heart disease, which caused a 60 percent blockage in one of her arteries, and cocaine use, according to The Washington Post.
Toxicology results also showed Houston had marijuana, Xanax, the muscle relaxant Flexeril, and the allergy medications Benadryl in her system, but none are considered factors in her death.
