American Horror Story co-creator Ryan Murphy revealed some new details about the themes of the upcoming fourth season, titled Freak Show, in addition to more about Jessica Lange's new character.

Murphy was interviewed by GoldDerby on Thursday about his various projects that have been nominated for Emmys this year, including HBO's TV movie The Normal Heart, Fox's musical series Glee, and FX's American Horror Story.

Asked what he could say about Freak Show, Murphy brought up some previously released information, such as the season being set in 1952, but also added some new info on themes.

Lange's character, Elsa Mars, is the owner of one of the last remaining freak shows in America, and her perception of freaks is different from the norm.

"Her perception is that the true freaks are the suburban women making martinis for their husbands and selling tupperware," Murphy quipped. He added that a big question of the season is, "who really are the freaks?" and "who are the normals?"

He noted that in the 1950s, television really drove the freak shows out of business, so he said a big theme would be how "current television has morphed into the new freak show."

Freak Show will have a certain social context, Murphy noted, much like Asylum, the second season in the horror anthology.

The fourth season of the series brings back many AHS regulars, including Lange, Sarah Paulson, Evan Peters and Frances Conroy, along with some actresses who joined the series for Coven, such as Kathy Bates, Angela Bassett and Emma Roberts.

American Horror Story: Freak Show is set to premiere in October on FX, though the network has not yet announced a specific air date.
