While the main implications of Captain America: The Winter Soldier dealt with the deterioration of S.H.I.E.L.D., it also revealed that Steve Rogers' best friend, Bucky Barnes, was still alive and kicking as the Winter Solider. Directors Talk 'Captain America 3' Direction, Tease 'Winter Soldier' Ties

In an interview with Yahoo on Tuesday, Anthony and Joe Russo, the directors of both The Winter Solider and the upcoming third installment, talked about Steve and Bucky's relationship heading into the next movie and how Steve would be searching for his lost friend.

Concerning Steve Rogers' moral core and what makes him a hero, Joe Russo said that "his morality is part of his superpower." The two brothers also added that a lot of new elements would be added to bring a twist on the Winter Solider.

'Captain America 3' News: Writers Have Two Villains They Really Want To Tackle

Right now, having the movie focus on the relationship between Bucky and Steve would make for a stepping stone to the possible departure of lead Chris Evans from the Marvel universe. While it has been teased that Sebastian Stan (Bucky) will take over as Captain America, the first steps could happen with a team-up during the third movie.

Time will tell if the Winter Solider will play a role in The Avengers: Age of Ultron, but Stan has already gone on the record and said he is signed for nine films, including Captain America 1 and 2, so that could hint that Marvel knows he will be taking over eventually.

Captain America 3 is slated to open in theaters on May 6, 2016.
