While most thought it would be a finished story, it seems like Obi-Wan Kenobi could be returning to have another story told within the Star Wars universe with a spin-off movie. But is the actor who most recently portrayed him coming back also?

SlashFilm picked up a rumor on Sunday from Making Star Wars that has pinpointed Kenobi as a character who could be returning through one of the planned spin-off movies. Godzilla director Gareth Edwards and Fantastic Four director Josh Trank are both set to direct two of the disclosed films.

According to the site, it seems like Kenobi is the character that is being targeted to get a standalone story soon, but no word on whether Edwards or Trank will be tackling the Jedi's tale.

Boba Fett rumored to get the first 'Star Wars' Spin-Off movie?

"Obi-Wan Kenobi - I've heard from quite a few people now that an Obi-Wan Kenobi movie is in the works. For the spin-off movies they were initially going to stay away from any Jedi or Sith characters," Making Star Wars reported.

"But I'm hearing now that because of the popularity of Obi-Wan (fans recently voting for him on the official website etc) that an art team is now working with a writer on concepts for an Obi-Wan movie."

The actor who recently portrayed Kenobi in the prequel films, Ewan McGregor, has already come out and said he would be open to returning to the role and was down for anything they wanted to do. The actor even acknowledged that the story would have to take place between Episode III and IV.

This would allow a story about what the character did between leaving Luke and Leia with their uncle and aunt in Tatooine and him saving Luke from the Tuscan Raiders in Episode IV and with McGregor now older, he would be able to slot into the role perfectly.

The first spin-off is expected to open in theaters in 2016.
