On Monday, Salon posted an interview with the actor where it was mentioned that during a performance, Rannells goes up to an audience member to grind as well as lie down on some of them. The actor mentioned how amazing it is for him to be able to let himself go like that.

"It's really freeing and exciting to get to do every night, particularly those rageful moments, because that's not something as a human in decent society that we're often allowed to do, just sort of lash out," Rannells said. "I'm definitely a Midwestern at heart who tries very hard to please everyone and make people feel comfortable so it's a really fun thing to get to be a b---- and get away with it..."

Rannells also talked about playing a character like Hedwig is something that he's glad to portray because it creates a good connection to his own sexual orientation.

"I do feel as a gay actor that it's nice to tell stories that are specific to my community or my experience on earth, and a lot of times that will come from other gay people because that's the most authentic way to go about it," he said.
