Bill Clinton and his wife Hillary are now grandparents!

Their only child, Chelsea Clinton, 34, welcomed her first baby with her husband Marc Mezvinsky on Friday.

"Marc and I are full of love, awe and gratitude as we celebrate the birth of our daughter, Charlotte Clinton Mezvinsky," the new mother tweeted early Saturday morning.

Clinton, who tied the knot to Mezvinsky in 2010, announced her pregnancy in April during a Clinton Foundation event in New York City.

"Marc and I are very excited that we have our first child arriving later this year," she said with her mother by her side. "And I certainly feel all the better, whether it's a girl or a boy, that she or he will grow up in a world full of so many strong, young female leaders. So thank you for inspiring me and inspiring future generations, including the one that we'll be lucky enough to welcome into our family later this year."

The former NBC News special correspondent added: "I just hope that I will be as good a mom to my child - hopefully children - as my mom was to me."

Former President Clinton recently spoke about his hopes for his grandchild.

"I want my grandson or granddaughter to get up every day and look at the world with wonder and reverence," he told George Stephanopoulos at the 2014 Clinton Global Initiative in New York City. "I want them to respect everyone they meet, whatever their background. I want them to really love being alive and when they grow up I want them to believe they have certain obligations to people who don't have all the opportunities they'll have."
