Joanne Borgella, an American Idol alum and a plus-size Wilhelmina model, died on Saturday from cancer. She was 32.

"With heavy hearts, we are deeply saddened to announce the passing of our beloved Joanne," Borgella's family wrote on the star's Facebook page. "At an early age, Joanne made a choice to serve and trust the Lord; and since her diagnosis over a year ago, Joanne made a choice to also be a fighter and share her journey with the world. Her faith, courage and strength were unshaken throughout every obstacle she encountered. Although our family is suffering with this great loss, we find comfort in the closeness Joanne shared with the Lord. We know her spirit still shines and will continue to live on in heaven."

Aside from showing off her singing talent on American Idol in 2008, the New York native modeled for brands such as Ashley Stewart, Macy's and Nordstrom. She even launched her own plus-size clothing line, JBNY.

"It is with our deepest condolences that we mourn the passing of our own Joanne Borgella. Her smile and brightness, compassion and courage will always be remembered. She has been an inspiration to us all. May she rest in peace," her modeling agency said in a statement.

In 2013, Borgella also starred on NUVOtv's Curvy Girls, which puts focus on the modeling careers of full-figured women. Her co-star Denise Bidot remembered her late friend on Facebook with a melancholic message.

"My heart is heavy and I can barely process my thoughts as I sit here in hair and makeup on set. I remember all the laughs, and tears, Joanne you were an amazing woman and I will always cherish the moments we had. I hope you are up in heaven singing your heart out," she wrote.

Borgella announced her cancer last October with a Facebook video taken while she was in the hospital. She said that her cancer was a "rare case" because it spread to her chest. She continued to document her battle for fans via social media.

On Sept. 23 she shared the below photo of herself and another woman on Instagram with the caption, "We are heading back to radiation for 2 procedures!! God js with us!! I have lots to fill you in on.. The presence of The Lord is here.. Prayers up!!! I love you guys."
