As the cast comes together and production begins for HBO's second season of True Detective, Matthew McConaughey insists that he has no regrets about calling it quits after Season 1.

Matthew McConaughey Is 'Confident' In Season 2 Of 'True Detective'

"I don't regret saying no to a second season," revealed the star to The Mirror on Friday.

McConaughey's performance as the reflective Rust Cohle during the crime drama's first season brought him much critical acclaim, as well as an Emmy nomination. Nonetheless, the actor prefers to change things up and explore new opportunities rather than just staying put indefinitely.

"I spent five or six months working on the show and that was just fine," he explained. "It had a beginning, a middle and an end for me and I don't know where it would have gone from there."

Not only was McConaughey content to appear for a single season, his acceptance of the role was contingent upon it.

"I am someone who likes to do different things," said the actor, who went on to star in Christopher Nolan's November blockbuster Interstellar.

"I would have never done it [True Detective] if I would have had to sign on for a guaranteed three seasons. I simply wouldn't have done it," he insisted, though McConaughey looks forward to seeing how the show will progress without him. "But I'm excited about the new cast of Colin [Farrell] and Vince [Vaughn]."

True Detective returns to HBO for a second season mid-2015.
