The actor was best known for his roles on El Chavo del Ocho and El Chapulin Colorado, but also for being the inspiration for the Bumblebee Man character on The Simpsons.

The Mexican comedian was a legend in his home country, according to The Guardian.

While not widely known for his roles in the U.S., he was very popular in his own country..

The Mexican president, Enrique Peña Nieto, led tributes for the comedian on Friday, according to The Guardian:

"Mexico has lost an icon whose work has transcended generations and borders," he said.

Though not may people in the US recognized him just by his name that seemed to change a bit when he opened a Twitter account in 2011, stated The Guardian.

They reported that in less than two months he had 1 million followers and by the time of his death that number had grown to 6.6 million.

The Guardian said his very first tweet was a simple one:

"Hello. I'm Chespirito. I'm 82 years old and this is my first tweet. This is my debut. All the good people, follow me!"
