Jason Segel and Michelle Williams have only been dating since the beginning of the year, but that has not deterred him in his role as stepdad to Matilda Rose, six-year-old daughter of Williams and the late Heath Ledger.

Segel reached out to the Ledger family and informed them that they can see Matilda Rose whenever they'd like, according to RadarOnline.

The "How I Met Your Mother" star contacted Kim Ledger, Heath's father, to let him know that he deeply cares for their granddaughter and Williams, a source said to RadarOnline.

Relations between Williams and the Ledgers became sour after the "Dark Knight Rises" star died of an accidental overdose of prescription drugs in January 2008. The "My Life With Marilyn" actress and his family fought over inheritance and ownership of his numerous awards.

Williams and Heath amicably split up after three years in September 2007.

Matters between Williams and the Ledgers have recently been patched up. According to RadarOnline, Segel hopes that "they can all be one, big happy family."

"Jason got on the phone and introduced himself to Kim, and then invited the Ledgers to use his home whenever they wanted to fly in from Australia to visit Michelle and Maddie," said the RadarOnline source close to the Ledger family.

"Kim was blown away by Jason's generosity and the two hit it off right away. Now Kim's given his blessing for Jason to marry Michelle and be a stepdad to Matilda."

Segel seems to be preparing for his upcoming role as stepfather by spending quality time with Matilda Rose while Williams is away and by taking her out on breakfast "dates."
