Chmerkovskiy is currently on tour with the Dancing With the Stars Live! Tour, which the dancer apparently slightly prefers to the ABC show. The Ukrainian-born dancer spoke with NJ.com while on tour, revealing his thoughts on performing live.

"The best part for me is the live show element. Cameras are not my forte. I'm more about the immediate connection with the audience," Chmerkovskiy admitted.

"I know on the show my role is more that of the mentor," he added. "To be honest, my first passion is just performing. To be able to come out there and not be worried about being judged or eliminated, it gives you a certain freedom."

Chmerkovskiy is on tour with several of his fellow Dancing With the Stars pros, including Mark Ballas, Witney Carson and Emma Slater. Season 19 winner Alfonso Ribeiro is also dancing in the tour, where he is serving as a sort of narrator, according to Chmerkovskiy.

"We have Alfonso kind of narrating the show, and he's a riot. I'm sure he is going to do a lot of improv," Chmerkovskiy said, saying he will "jump into the audience" for some parts of the tour.

Chmerkovskiy will be back for the 20th season of Dancing With the Stars.

Dancing With the Stars returns for season 20 on Monday, March 16 at 8 p.m. ET/PT on ABC.
