The cast of HBO's True Detective has remained pretty quiet throughout production, but this week Vince Vaughn finally opened up about the crime drama's new season.

Vince Vaughn Might Be Working Alone On 'True Detective' This Season

With a new setting and new cast, there's been a lot of talk as to whether or not the series will continue to engage audiences as it did with Rust Cohle (Matthew McConaughey) and Marty Hart (Woody Harrelson) in 2014. According to Vaughn, however, the "richness" of the show this time around is just as good.

"[Nic Pizzolatto] is such a great writer, and so much of this is driven by his stories," the actor said of the program's creator during an interview with Playboy this week. "I thought Woody and Matthew did an exceptional job with this first season. This one's very different, though. It's a totally different story, with its own characters. The thing that's consistent is the richness of the characters and the quality of the material."

'True Detective' Still Waiting For Three Directors In 2015

Vaughn is set to play career criminal Frank Semyon on the series and photos of the actor on set in Los Angeles have been leaked a few times since production began in 2014. All of the images show Vaughn appearing quite serious in a fine looking suit, often cracking jokes with the crew in between takes. Known primarily for his comedic work, Vaughn has been cast in serious roles before.

True Detective was a career changer for McConaughey and could do the same for Vaughn, depending on what kind of work the actor chooses next.

As for the show's upcoming season, Vaughn insists that it's all about the material.

"Nic is so great about investigating characters and their complexities in an authentic and engaging way," continued Vaughn. "I want to watch this show not because I'm in it, but as a fan of the material."

True Detective will return on HBO for a second season mid-2015.
