Showtime released two character themed posters this week for the upcoming season of Penny Dreadful.  

Dorian Haunted By His Feelings For Vanessa On 'Penny Dreadful' This Season 

Shared through Hit Fix on Wednesday the images show a harrowing journey ahead for the program's leading characters.

The first poster features a tortured Sir Malcolm (Timothy Dalton) crying out in anguish, with a streak of red blood splattered across the page and the title of the series in sharp, white letters.

The second promo shows Sembene (Danny Sapani), the show's most mysterious leading man, staring up cautiously at the sky. The poster featured the same strip of blood and title letters. It is rumored that Sembene's background will be further revealed this season, though it is uncertain just how much creator John Logan will want to give away in the beginning.

As for Sir Malcolm, he will have plenty of his own demons to face. Last season he killed his vampyric daughter in order to save Vanessa Ives (Eva Green), but a decision like that is sure to come with a price. Will he be able to forgive himself? Move beyond the tragedy? Then of course there is Evelyn Poole (Helen McCrery), who seems to be trying to win Sir Malcolm over in order to get to Vanessa for her own evil purposes.

Indeed, there looks to be plenty of suffering ahead of the Victorian supernatural drama.   

Penny Dreadful will return on Showtime for a second season Sunday, May 3 at 10 p.m. ET/PT.
